Australia and New Zealand Newsstream

By Kirsten Perris | 27 April 2020

Series: Our favourite State Library eresources.

People often ask us what our most loved eresources are. Admittedly we all have a favourite, or two, or three. It’s hard to pick as there are so many wonderful State Library eresources available. In this series our Librarians and Library Technicians share with you their most favourite eresources and how they’ve been used to solve research queries.

Next in the series we look at Australia and New Zealand Newsstream, a big favourite of Librarian Steph Venturato.

Australia and New Zealand Newsstream database

Australia and New Zealand Newsstream database

So why is Australia and New Zealand Newsstream so fabulous?

The database provides access to over 400 Australian and New Zealand newspapers.

Best of all, you can access Australia and New Zealand Newsstream online from home with your free State Library membership.

Keep reading to discover some of the key features of this database and tips to help you get the most out of your search.

First up, a little bit more about Australian and New Zealand Newsstream.

Australia and New Zealand Newsstream combines major news sources from Fairfax, News Limited and ABC. It also includes all Queensland regional papers. Issues start from the late 1990's to present, and you can easily check individual sources for dates covered.

It is a text only database, meaning no pictures, ads, classifieds or inserts. If you’re a glass-half-full kind of person you might say it has a clean, minimalist aesthetic with no distracting ads. Although keep in mind that if you find an article that has an associated picture, you can get in touch with us for a copy. We may have the microfilm copy of that newspaper and can scan the image for you.

We use Australia and New Zealand Newsstream all the time for research questions. Just some recent examples have been researching local events, property developments, sporting competitions and political scandals.  Another common request we get is for a specific article that may have been removed from a news website or requires a paid subscription.

Searching Australian and New Zealand Newsstream

Simple search

Start with a simple search. Once your results list is displayed, you can refine your results by year, or newspaper using the refine options on the left side of the screen.

One common mistake is to search for an exact article title. Newspapers will often change titles of articles between print and online, even if the content is the same. So just remember to search for keywords.

Don’t forget you can…

  • Use "quotation marks" to search for exact terms or phrase such as "great barrier reef"
  • Use OR to add alternative search terms and broaden your search

Publication search

If you only want to search in a specific newspaper, try going straight to that publication. You don’t even need to know the exact title, try the place. Then use the option to Search within Publication or Browse specific issues.
