Who we help: Young People and Families

Hi there, Krystin here from the Queensland Library Foundation.

This week I am taking you behind the scenes with the Young People and Families team.

This amazing team is currently working hard to support families at home, until we can once again welcome them through our doors.

They have developed a range of resources for children and families to support a life-long love of reading.

If you have been missing State Library’s Story Time, Rhyme Time, and Baby Time, don’t worry - you can now stream these sessions from the comfort of your own home. The First 5 Forever website is your gateway to making the most of your child’s first five years with creative ideas, themed book lists, craft activities, bear hunts, and so much.

Recently, Queensland Library Foundation donors assisted the Young People and Families team by donating to develop five storytelling kits, and a variety of resources, to enable literacy sessions incorporating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander words.

This project, part of State Library’s support of the International Year of Indigenous Languages, saw more than 100 school students and community members gathered at the Gordon White Library in Mackay to listen to The Very Hungry Caterpillar told in Yuwibara language. It was a great morning and the community was very excited about bringing their language back to life through this popular children's story.

If you would like to explore more resources compiled by the Young People and Families team, then I highly recommend these:

• Reading Adventure Club – an online free club for children of all ages to help keep children engaged with reading, and each other, over the next couple of months.
• Animalia - engage with Graeme Base’s ‘Animalia’ and ‘The ABC of Flying’
• Kanopy for Kids - unlimited access to quality children’s films and documentaries.
• National Geographic for Kids - amazing adventures in science, nature, culture, archaeology, and space.
