Celebrate 20 years of Indigenous Knowledge Centres (IKC) in Queensland. 10 October 2022 - 9 June 2023 IKCs are a hub for community, providing a place to gather and participate in programs based on community interests including traditional knowledge, culture and languages. The first 7 IKCs opened in 2002, at Lockhart River, Aurukun, Erub, Mabauig, New Mapoon, Pormpuraaw and Wujal Wujal. Since then, a number of other centres have opened and now there are 26 across Queensland all created in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Shire and Regional Councils. IKCs are place-based, and no two are the same, as they respond to the unique needs of their community and offer a whole cultural precinct wrapped up in one small building.

Find birth, death and marriage records before civil (government) registration was introduced into NSW including Moreton Bay in March 1856. There are some official records, but you may need to use more. Join this webinar to find out what some of those records might be to build a better picture of an event and resolve conflicting details. You will: learn how to identify relevant records in the NSW and Queensland Registry indexes and then search NSW original records for them successfully; understand how to expand on this information with related records including newspaper notices, coronial inquests or Colonial Secretary's Correspondence; discover how to use other records to resolve inconsistencies when possible; develop an awareness of the difference between church records before and after March 1856.

Dr Reese will present his project Electrifying Queensland: modern machines in the sunshine state. Afternoon session (Auditorium 1, level 2): 2 pm to 3:30 pm First Nations photographers Speaker: Ms Jo-Anne Driessens, 2021 Mittelheuser Scholar in Residence. Ms Driessens will present on her project Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander lens perspectives. First Nations family history Speaker: Ms Rachel West-Captain, 2021 Monica Clare Research fellow. Ms West-Captain will present her project A Murruwarri Family of South-West Queensland and North-West New South Wales: the West and Captain family.
