The Palm Island Spring Fair, held between 6 - 9 September, was the largest community event to be held in recent years and included a wide range of activities for all to enjoy. Nearly the whole community was in attendance, as well as family and friends visiting from nearby Townsville. Events included traditional dancing, multiple parades, kids' rides, fireworks, sporting competitions and an elders' dinner.
The State Library of Queensland, in partnership with the Palm Island Bwgcolman Indigenous Knowledge Centre, engaged the community through a display of the centre's local history collection and a special HistoryPin photographic activity. Placards featuring historical images of the CBD were posted in and around the fairgrounds, and community members were invited to capture modern day images of the same scenes depicted on the placards for sharing online. Younger community members could hardly believe the photos depicting fields of palm trees where CBD buildings now stand, while adults were proud to see how much their community had grown over the years.
