International Day of People with Disability 2023

The United Nations theme for International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is ‘united in action to rescue and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals for, with and by persons with disabilities.’ The 2023 theme for IDPwD asks everyone to work together to make the world better and fairer for people with disability. 

IDPwD is held on 3 December 2023. IDPwD is an opportunity to work together and raise awareness for people with disability. At State Library, our disability resources are intended to break down barriers and make a community that is fairer, more understanding, and more supportive. State Library provides free access to information for all Queenslanders, and for the advancement of public libraries and Indigenous Knowledge Centres across the state. 

State Library is a place for all visitors and staff, access is free and equitable. We serve people everywhere in Queensland, onsite and online, ensuring our resources are user friendly and accessible for all people including people with disability. 

State Library has a range of eresources and databases that strive to assist people with disability, and that enable them to access resources that are inclusive for all. Accessibility features such options to read aloud, change screen or text colour, and screen magnification enhance the experience for users and assists them to access the information they require.

Gale Health and Wellness has several accessibility features such as options to read aloud and select fonts. The font options include OpenDyslexic, which makes text easier to read for people who have dyslexia or visual impairments. Other friendlier features include display options such as line, letter and word spacing; decrease and increase font size; colour variations; and the option to download documents as MP3 files.

CloudLibrary/Bibliotecha is a collection of ebooks and audiobooks in languages other than English. The collection includes ebooks and audiobooks in 25 languages. It allows users to access ebooks and audiobooks via their computers, mobiles, and tablets. You can download the app from the App Store or Google Play, log into the library, browse, borrow, and read.  

LOTE4KIDS

LOTE4KIDS is a library resource that allows kids to enjoy the magic of digital books in languages other than English. The platform provides more than 2000 digital picture books in over 50 languages together with English translations. Users can use it via a computer or download an app for ease of portability. LOTE4KIDS is easy to use, safe and great for parents while on the go. 

Britannica Library

Encyclopedia Britannica is a reference database. It has three separate levels to choose from for kids, teens and adults. Each of the content levels is age appropriate and in line with the Australian curriculum. This database is easy to use and enables you to explore a dictionary, images, videos, articles, magazines, recommended websites, audio clips, primary sources and ebooks. Encyclopedia Britannica has accessibility features including read aloud, text-speech options available within all levels. All videos include transcriptions and the option to download as MP4.

PressReader allows users to access popular magazines, access world and regional newspapers as well as choose from publications on their favourite subjects such as hobbies, fashion, food, entertainment, homemaking, health, travel, and culture. PressReader enables users to listen to magazines or newspaper being read aloud, change the page view, share, print, copy, and download. 

Access PressReader for free with your State Library membership onsite or online. Access PressReader on your mobile, computer or tablet and customise your reading experience.

State Library provides free access to information, fostering knowledge and learning. We partner with local government to realise the potential of public libraries and Indigenous Knowledge Centres.

Libby by OverDrive is another option to access magazines, ebooks and audiobooks. Libby can be accessed from your browser or downloaded to your computer or mobile device. You may need Adobe Digital Editions for (Windows or Mac) or OverDrive for Windows 8 or download the Libby App to view on your mobile device.  

State Library continues to build stronger connections with people with disability and seeks to improve services for all Queenslanders by providing an accessible and inclusive library.
