Bestselling author David Hill entertained and captivated over 90 guests at the State Library last night when he spoke about his latest book, 1788.

During his research David delved into diaries, letters and official records to reveal many interesting insights into life in Georgian England and the hardships of the people who traveled with the First Fleet to the far flung shores of Australia. For instance:
- more prisoners were dying from diseases in English gaols than were being executed
- half the local Aboriginal population were killed by an outbreak of smallpox a year after the settlers arrived
- the youngest convict was only nine years old when he was sentenced to transportation
