Graceville Park, Graceville,1887 (Map of the Week)

State Library of Queensland has an extensive collection of historical maps of Queensland, some of which have been digitised and can be viewed online.

This real estate map from 1887 advertises 237 allotments of land for sale at the Graceville Park in the Brisbane suburb of Graceville. The allotments were situated along Park Road, White Street, Alfred Street (now Sandon Street) and three unnamed streets on the map (now Oxley Road, Verney Road East and Guard Street).

Prior to the sale extensive publicity was published in Brisbane newspapers.

"Graceville Park is situated just across the river from Indooroopilly, and takes its name from Graceville Railway Station, from which it is only a stone's throw, and is on the main road leading out of the station. The paddock on which the Graceville Station-house is built, is the only land intervening. Four minutes after you leave the train you reach Graceville Park...Just contrast our town boys with those at Graceville; no pale, sickly faces at Graceville; no doctors at Graceville, simply because they are not wanted there." (Queensland Figaro, October 22, 1887).

A public auction was supposedly held at the site on the afternoon of October 29, 1887. No information regarding the results of the auction appear to have been published in Brisbane newspapers.
