Finding your inner fellow

Pearl divers, street posters, the Centaur Memorial Fund for nurses and Peters Ice cream factory are just some of the topics Queensland Memory Award recipients have researched over recent years. This wide variety of topics is indicative of the vast amount of collection material held in the John Oxley Library. With over 40 kms of collection material, there is much to explore.  Research projects are not just reading, thinking, writing – repeat; they can generate outcomes as well. Producing content such as oral histories, encouraging the donation of material to the John Oxley Library or making new connections across our communities of interest or communities of practice are all ways that Queensland Memory fellows can contribute to creating new knowledge about Queensland through their projects.

If you have a research project that uncovers or tells an untold story about Queensland, and don’t know where to start, here’s a few things to get you going. Start by browsing the John Oxley Library through the One Search catalogue to see what is in the collection that may support your project.  Come along to the information night on Wednesday 20 February and bring your questions for our staff, past fellows and one of the selection panel judges. Consider which fellowship or award might be applicable to your project.  For example, if your research focuses on a business, the private sector, an entrepreneur or commercial venture, think about applying for the Queensland Business Leaders hall of fame fellowship. 

Fellows enjoy a stipend to support their research activities (except the John Oxley Library Honorary Fellowship), 12 months residency in the Neil Roberts Research Lounge and access to State Library’s expert staff.
