2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages: Word of the Week - Week Three.
By administrator | 15 January 2019
As part of State Library's commitment to the 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages, we will be promoting a 'word of the week' from one of the 125+ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages and dialects from across Queensland.

State Library's IYIL2019 Word of the Week: Week 3.
Captain Cook's Journal Saturday 23 July, 1770 - One of the Men saw an Animal something less than a greyhound; it was of a Mouse Colour, very slender made, and swift of Foot. On Saturday 4 August, Cook wrote in his journal that the animal was 'called by the Natives Kangooroo, or Kanguru'.

The word of the week was suggested by Dora Gibson, IKC Coordinator, Hope Vale!
Gangurru is the first recorded word for an Aboriginal language and was written down by Lt James Cook with an accompanying sketch by Joseph Banks while the Endeavour was being repaired near Cooktown.
State Library of Queensland invites you to celebrate the 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages as we raise awareness of the rich diversity of Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages.
Join the conversation as we post a new word for each week!
Week Three 15-21 January 2019.
