Portrait of an artist: Pat Hoffie

Meet contemporary Queensland visual artist Pat Hoffie, in conversation with Chris Saines.

Pat Hoffie, a practising artist since the 1970s, is deeply interested in examining and testing concepts around power, value, place, feminism, cultural diversity and post-colonial fallout. Originally trained as a painter she has worked across many media and disciplines, gaining national recognition for her groundbreaking exhibitions, projects and publications. Increasingly interested in experimentation and artistic exchange, Pat has both initiated and participated in international projects and residencies. Her advocacy and support of female artists is legendary and unwavering. In recent years she has been recognised for her decades of commitment and contribution to the arts with a Member of the Order of Australia (AM), and to scholarship in visual arts by being conferred as Professor Emeritus.

Chris Saines CNZM is the Director of Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) in Brisbane. After originally working in education and collection management at QAGOMA, he moved to New Zealand to lead Auckland Art Gallery (Toi o Tāmaki) for 17 years, guiding it through a major redevelopment and expansion. In 2013, Chris returned to Queensland to lead our state gallery through four editions of the Asia Pacific Triennial, major international exhibitions and countless exhibitions of Queensland artists in that time

Portrait of an artist is a series of events that brings to life the James C Sourris AM collection of artist interviews, where esteemed Queensland artists and their craft are captured in the State Library’s collections. This event will feature a screening of Pat Hoffie’s interview from the collection, followed by a lively conversation and Q&A session.

Generously supported by James C Sourris AM through Queensland Library Foundation.
