John Oxley Library

The John Oxley Library is located on level 4 and contains collections unique to Queensland. The Heritage Collections is a quiet place for research using original materials such as diaries, manuscripts, artworks and maps. There is also a quiet study space in the John Oxley Library with views over the Brisbane River for individual study.

 

Features

Named for the explorer, John Oxley in 1934, the John Oxley Library documents the history of life in Queensland and includes:

  • original manuscripts
  • diaries
  • business and station records
  • artworks
  • photographs
  • maps
  • architectural plans
  • books, magazines, newspapers, and ephemera.

The collections are acquired through legal deposit, donation and selective purchasing. Read more about State Library’s Guidelines for the Memory Collections

To preserve the heritage of our state, John Oxley Library collections on level 4 are not for loan. Visitors can access the physical and online collections in the Library. State Library members are welcome to request items using our One Search catalogue.

To ensure the ongoing preservation of our collections the following items are not permitted in the Heritage Collections area:

There is also a quiet study space in the John Oxley Library with views over the Brisbane River. Bottled water and bags are permitted in this area.
