World War One Patriotism in Wide Bay Region now on Historypin

Fraser Coast Regional Council, in partnership with the Maryborough Wide Bay and Burnett Historical Society Inc., has curated a World War 1 collection on Historypin called World War One: Patriotism in the Wide Bay Region.

Workshop participants

Thirty-two images owned by the Maryborough Wide Bay and Burnett Historical Society Inc. were scanned and uploaded onto the site. The Patriotic efforts of World War 1 from 1915 and 1920 are portrayed in these images and include photographs from the Teebar fundraising effort, Bauple fancy dress, Tiaro Home Guard, Victory Parade and the Prince of Wales visit thanking the Empire. The images depict a vibrant community that thrived in Wide Bay Region at the turn of the twentieth century.

Historypin

This curated collection will culminate in an exhibition of 25 of the images. This will be launched on the 4th of March at Gatakers Art Space on Kent Street, Maryborough and will run for one month. The Historypin project was made possible through a QANZAC100 Historypin grant from the State Library of Queensland.

Two other collections currently are open for public contribution. These are Fraser Coast Local History and Fraser Coast Commemorates.

Workshop participants

Fraser Coast Libraries has conducted three workshops as part of this project. The first was an introduction to Historypin, the second was about scanning images, metadata and organising your collection and the third included information about researching using State Library of Queensland databases and Trove. An interest in Historypin has built since the commencement of the project. It has been a great experience helping people develop confidence in uploading information onto the site. The rich knowledge of local history in this area can be unlocked and shared using Historypin and the enthusiastic participants are well on the way to teaching each other and us many things about the past and this site. A wonderful cross pollination of ideas sprung out of these workshops. A Historypin chat group will be held on the first Tuesday of the month at the Maryborough Library from 10 to 11.30 to continue learning about the site and sharing our history.
