Words of War: letters and diaries of Queenslanders who served

This is the first in a series of First World War resource tools, to go live on the State Library of Queensland's website.

Produced by the Q ANZAC 100 team, it provides a great starting point for those looking for personal accounts of this period.

Each entry includes a brief description of the collection as it relates to the First World War and links directly to the record in the Library Catalogue. It is the intention of the Q ANZAC 100 team to reveal and digitise as many of these collections as possible in the coming commemorative period.

The content of each collection is extremely varied, often there will only be one or two items within a large collection of family papers, that relate to the war. Other collections contain Gallipoli dairies or soldier-photographs which are fabulous resources not only for researchers, but for the families of those served.

The site will be updated regularly to include further discoveries and new acquisitions, and weekly blogs are being posted to highlight these collections - Queensland's World War 1 Centenary.

Further resource lists are in process, they will include:

  • Images of war - photographs, albums, postcards
  • Objects of war - memorabilia and souvenirs
  • Stories of war - narratives and manuscripts
  • Committees and Organisations for war
  • Publications of war
