Indigenous Australian, William AH SEE, 41st Infantry Battalion

William AH SEE (aka Ahsee) was born in Taroom, to Tom Ah See and Maggy Dunn. Maggy Dunn later resided at the Deebing Creek Aboriginal Mission, Ipswich. William was a carpenter working on Morella Station, via Roleston when he enlisted age 24, in November 1915, his wife Evelyn was residing in Stewart Street, Paddington, Brisbane.

William trained at Bell’s Paddock, Enoggera Army Camp, outside Brisbane before proceeding overseas with ‘A’ Company 41st Infantry Battalion, 20 June 1916 on board HMAT Demosthenes. He served with his unit in France, however he was hospitalised several times with bronchial asthma. William was evacuated to England and after treatment sent to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth to convalesce. Unfortunately his condition did not improve enough to continue on active service, and was reclassified medically unfit.

He returned to Australia on a New Zealand hospital ship, for discharge in September 1917.
