This week Queensland lost influential singer-songwriter Carol Lloyd, who passed away in Brisbane after a long illness. Lloyd was part of Brisbane's music scene during the 1970s as frontwoman of the band Railroad Gin. The band is best known for their 1974 single A Matter Of Time. The single reached the number 1 spot in the Brisbane charts and spent 7 weeks in the top 10. A Matter Of Time still receives radio play today. Railroad Gin’s singles included Do Ya Love Me/The Academy Rock (1974); You Told The World (1975) and The Keeper And The Lord (1975). After Railroad Gin, Lloyd went on to form the Carol Lloyd Band in 1976, with two songs that made the Brisbane Top 10, Storm in My Soul (No.9) and All The Good Things (No.5).
After a hiatus Lloyd returned with a solo album, Take It Or Leave It, in 1981. At the time of release, Christine Hogan from the Sydney Morning Herald, praised the album - "Now here is a comeback album with impact...The title track on this album shows her voice at its best - deep, resonant, powerful and evocative." (SMH, Apr 3, 1981). The album featured several prominent musicians including former member of the Bee Gees, Colin Petersen, and Wilbur Wilde from Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons.
State Library of Queensland is fortunate to hold an original 45 single of Railroad Gin's A Matter Of Time, to preserve the memory of this legendary Queensland musician.
