Unlocking creativity at your local library: Quilpie Library’s Makerspace
By bbrown | 6 January 2025

Libraries have always been places of learning and discovery, but in recent years they’ve become so much more than just books. Take Quilpie Library, for example, which recently introduced its exciting Makerspace—a new, innovative addition that’s changing how people of all ages connect with art, creativity, and technology.
A space for everyone
Recognising a gap in creative programs for adults and teens in their remote community, Quilpie Library has opened its doors to a world of hands-on opportunities, offering everything from resin art supplies to digital tools.
Before the Makerspace, Quilpie primarily served as a traditional library which, while wonderful for younger readers, wasn’t necessarily engaging for older visitors. By introducing the Makerspace, the library was able to appeal to a wider range of people, especially those who might never have considered the library as a place to connect with their creative side.
What’s inside the Makerspace?
The Makerspace features artistic equipment and craft supplies. Whether you're an experienced artist or just looking to try something new, you’re free to use equipment which includes:
-
Resin art moulds for creating unique jewellery or decorative pieces
-
Screen-printing supplies for printing your own designs
-
Sewing machines, embroidery hoops, and hand loom weaving kits for textile enthusiasts
-
iPads and Apple Pens for digital creativity
But it’s not just about the equipment—it’s about creating a space where people can gather, share ideas, and be inspired.
Community workshops
While the Makerspace is available for anyone to use, the most popular aspect has been the facilitated workshops and school holiday programs including:
-
Resin jewellery creation: Participants learned how to create beautiful, custom resin jewellery pieces, which sparked a lot of interest among local creatives.
-
Bookbinding and gelli plate printing: Attendees had the chance to create their own books and experiment with printing techniques, adding a personal touch to their creations.
-
Glass mosaic art: This workshop offered an opportunity for people to explore the art of glass mosaics, allowing them to craft their own stunning decorative pieces.
The success of these workshops has inspired the library to continue to offer more facilitated classes in the future, alongside a monthly craft program to keep the creative energy flowing.
Libraries are more than just books
Quilpie Library’s Makerspace is a great example of how libraries are evolving to meet the needs of their communities. It’s not just about borrowing books anymore—it’s about offering people the tools and resources to explore new hobbies, develop skills, and express themselves creatively—which is so important in remote locations like Quilpie.
Whether you're looking to dive into digital art or get your hands dirty with some resin crafts, the Makerspace at Quilpie Library is just one example of the many creative programs popping up at libraries in Queensland.
State Library’s enduring partnership with local government delivers more than 325 public libraries and Indigenous Knowledge Centres (IKCs) across Queensland. In every bustling city and town, libraries and IKCs are social, cultural and digital hubs that offer much more than you think.
