Toohey's City View Estate, [Greenslopes], 1914 (Map of the Week)
This real estate map from 1914 advertises land for sale at the Toohey's City View Estate, now part of the Brisbane suburb of Greenslopes. The allotments were situated along Ridge Street, Pear Street, Peach Street, Bunya Street, Garden Street, Cedar Street, Henry Street, Mary Street (now Newdegate Street), Thomas Street, Galway Street, Mount Street, Short Street (now Drummond Street) and Logan Road.
Prior to the sale extensive publicity was published in Brisbane newspapers.
"Beautiful home sites, commanding charming views, lovely hill slopes, and perfect drainage. The Logan road tram extension, which links up the estate with the city, is nearly completed." (The Telegraph, 11 April 1914, p.11)
A public auction was held at the site on the afternoon of 25 April 1914. The results of the sale were published in The Telegraph newspaper.
"Messrs. G.H. Blocksidge and Ferguson report a very successful sale of allotments in the Toohey's City View Estate on Saturday afternoon. The attendance was very large, and the bidding brisk. The tram extension to Greenslopes was a special feature in connection with the sale, as buyers were landed right at the estate. Eighty allotments were sold at an average of £27 10s each . The highest price realised was £43 per allotment. Total sales were £2,230. Balance of estate is being offered next Saturday." (The Telegraph, 27 April 1914, p.7)
