Surry Hill Estate, Coorparoo, 1924 (Map of the Week)
This real estate map from 1924 advertises 101 allotments of land for sale at the Surry Hill Estate in the Brisbane suburb of Coorparoo. The allotments were situated along Shakespeare Street, Welwyn Crescent, Letchworth Road, Howard Street, Mackay Street, Regal Street, Rees Avenue and Macaulay Street.
The opening day of the sale was held on 7 June 1924. The results were reported in the Daily Mail (Brisbane) newspaper.
"Some indication of the value of suburban land on the south side of the river was given on Saturday afternoon, when £775 was paid for three 16-perch allotments on the crest of Surry Hill Estate, Coorparoo, which works out at over £258 an allotment. The Surry Hill Estate, Coorparoo, was opened for sale on Saturday afternoon. There was a large attendance, and the Queensland Properties Ltd, report that they had a most successful sale, a total of 57 allotments being sold for a sum in the vicinity of £7000. The prices realised ranged from £100 to £300 an allotment. The biggest price paid was £775 for three 16-perch allotments on the top of the hill. This estate, which was formerly owned by Mr James Hipwood, has been coveted by home buyers for many years, as it is situated between the Coorparoo and Greenslopes tram lines. It is also the intention of the Coorparoo Shire Council to complete the roads through and past the estate within six months." (Daily Mail, 10 June 1924, p.14)
