State Library of Queensland has an extensive collection of historical maps of Queensland, some of which have been digitised and can be viewed online.
This real estate map from 1882 advertises 114 allotments of land for sale at the Sparkling Wave Estate in Southport. The allotments were situated on Lawson Street, Garden Street, White Street, Scarborough Street, Nerang Street, High Street, Short Street (now Suter Street), Brisbane Road (now Queen Street) and two unnamed lanes (now Owens Lane and Little High Street)
Prior to the sale extensive publicity was published in Brisbane, Ipswich and Logan newspapers.
"The most telling advantages possessed by Southport over all the other watering places are the climate is decidedly cooler; emphatically more healthy; the sea-bathing grand; there are literally no mosquitoes; the fishing is unsurpassed in Australia waters; the shooting is really good; the botanist has a wide field to explore in; the boating is everything to be desired, and the drives around the place, amidst the every-changing and glorious scenery, are simply enchanting." (Logan Witness, November 25, 1882)
A public auction was held at the School of Arts in Ipswich on the afternoon of December 2 , 1888. The Brisbane Courier newspaper reported the results of the sale.
"John Cameron reports the sale by auction at the School of Arts, Ipswich, on Saturday, of 18 allotments in the Sparkling Wave Estate, situate at Southport. The attendance was fair, and the bidding for the lots sold spirited. The price realised varied from £20 up to £101 per lot, the total result of the sale being £750." (Brisbane Courier, December 4, 1882)
