The simple fax: This 'dinosaur' of tech isn't dead yet

If you're in the market for a tech bargain, chances are you'll find some great deals on fax machines.

It might seem strange that the bulky units are still available or that makers of fancier "multi-function" photocopiers would bother spruiking their fax credentials.

But for a cohort of small businesses across Australia, firing up the fascimile is still part of the daily routine.

"You used to always hear the calls coming through, and all the funny noises with it," says head of Melbourne business TIS Financial, Rocky Tempone.

"But there are still clients with fax machines these days and they still rely on them to reach our office."

TIS Financial started in the late 1970s and 40 years on Tempone says there's still a group of clients that want to fax their details through.

"We might have clients in their 70s and 80s, for example, who were quite diligent with the fax but have never had a computer," he says.

Then there's the communications lines with the Australian Taxation Office: the ATO still gives business practitioners the option of faxing documents to a number of direct departments. Read more
