Shorncliffe Pier Transformed for British Commercial

By JOL Admin | 14 March 2011

Earlier in the year Shorncliffe Pier was transformed into a bedroom, a kitchen, and even a vegetable garden, for the filming of a series of television commercials for a British retailer.

Homebase are the UK’s second largest home improvement store with more than 300 large, out-of-town stores throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland selling over 30,000 products across DIY and decorating, home and garden ranges.

Shorncliffe was chosen from a selection of film locations worldwide as the setting for the commercials by Homebase because of the wonderful Pier and the Queensland weather...although, as can be seen in the images above, it turned out not to be as sunny as they would have been hoping for.

Shorncliffe Pier, the former Sandgate Fisherman’s Co-Op, and a shop on the corner of Kate Street and Palm Avenue at Shorncliffe were utilised during filming of the production. A notice nailed to a post adjacent to the car park said “They were employing about 100 Queensland crew and that they intended to source their building and filming materials from local suppliers” including businesses in Sandgate. I discovered by chatting to one gentleman that he was one of a group of local people being used as extras in the shoot. He also said that the home wares and other products including the plants were going to be given to the victims of the recent floods who have lost everything. Homebase were donating products valued at over $600,000 to Queensland Flood Disaster Relief.
