Trove - digitised newspapers. Website

If you find yourself with spare time over the holiday period you might like to consider participating in this important project by correcting some of the electronically translated text.  The errors in translation have occurred due to the poor quality of the original newspapers but the work of hundreds of volunteers has greatly assisted in improving the accuracy of the text.  Guidelines for participating are available: http://trove.nla.gov.au/general/participating-in-digitised-newspapers-faq/#Correct

If you would like to see your historic local newspaper made available check the list below to see which titles are intended to be digitised and made available during the 2011-2012 financial year.  If your newspaper is not there please see the National Library of Australia’s Contributor Guidelines which provides information about the processes and costs associated with sponsoring a local title.

Is is possible to access The Courier Mail after 1954?

Hi JohnUnfortunately no - although we do have The Courier-Mail and The Telegraph on microfilm. There are some subscription databases which index part of the Courier from the 90s onwards. If you complete our online enquiry form we can answer your enquiry in more depth - http://www.slq.qld.gov.au/services/ask-usMyles Sinnamon - JOL blog editor

In 1965 I applied for an apprentice position with Ansett ANA advertised in the Employment Section of the Courier Mail. I do not remember the month but it would have been after June and before December of that year. I don't know how many times the position was advertised but it was a week day publication. After an interview in Brisbane with the company I was advised I had a position. I was with the company until I retired, so is part of my life and I would love to be able to obtain a copy of the Advertisement for my own records

Hi JohnThank you for your question. Could you please fill in our online enquiry form and our reference librarians will look into this for you. Here is the link – http://www.slq.qld.gov.au/services/ask-usThanksMyles Sinnamon – blog editor

Is it possible to access the The Courier Mail Brisbane for 1994?

Hi DulcieUnfortunately the Courier-Mail isn't available on Trove after 1954. A full version of the Courier-Mail can be manually perused on microfilm at SLQ for this period. Additionally there could be something in one of our full-text databases, however these databases usually do not include items from the classified sections or public notices. I would recommend filling in our online enquiry form with details on what you are looking for and one of our reference librarians will look into this for you. You have listed the Townsville Daily Bulletin as being 1885-1954. I am interested in viewing 1885-1907 but do not know how to do this. TROVE have this paper for 1907-1954. Can you help me with information on accessing the 1885-1907 editions.

Hi RoseWe apologies for this error. Trove's holdings for the Townsville Bulletin starts in 1907. We do hold issues earlier than 1907 on microfilm, however this run is very imperfect with only these issues surviving - Dec. 3, 1885; May 10-11, 1887; Oct. 1, 1887 - Dec. 31, 1888. You might be interested in exploring the Townsville Herald which covers Aug. 1, 1876-Dec. 31, 1879; July 10, 1886-Aug. 5, 1891. This title is also available on microfilm. If you have any further questions please fill in our online enquiry form with your details and one of our helpful librarians will assist you with your question. http://www.slq.qld.gov.au/services/ask-usRegardsMyles – State Library of Queensland

Hi SLQ, wondering why digitised version on the Morning Bulletin on TROVE are only covered between 1878-1954 which is great. But wouldn’t mind local news, events and happenings on the past 50 or 60 years or so on TROVE as well. Why can’t it happen?

Hi Leonie, great question. We can only focus on digitising newspapers published before 1955 on the general understanding that they are out of copyright. Newspapers published after 1954 remain in copyright and require permission from the publishers to digitise and upload to Trove. Some newspaper titles published after 1955 have been made available on Trove due to individual agreements with the publisher.
