On Now! Join the Summer Reading Club challenge

By Young People and Families | 1 December 2020

Join the free online Summer Reading Club and let fairy tales, myths and legends light up your child’s imagination these holidays exploring Tales of Wonder.

This summer State Library invites children and families to challenge themselves to read and enjoy stories in new and exciting ways. With parental/adult assistance, children and young people can create a user profile, choose and update their avatar and earn fun rewards, including digital badges and XP by completing online reading-inspired challenges.

Encourage your children to:

  • “Join the reading challenge”
Discover new and exciting ways to keep reading all summer long. There are 40 challenges to complete online. Can your children complete them all?
  • “Complete challenges and earn badges”
Earn fun rewards online! There are 40 online badges to collect as children work their way through the challenges. Experience Points (XP) are earned as they go to unlock new avatars and other fun rewards. To build more XP, challenges can be completed multiple times.
  • “Discover new favourite books”
Nothing beats a good book. Children can share what they are reading this summer online and review reading recommendations from other Club members. Perhaps they’ll discover something new to read this summer!
  • “Share their creativity”
Children can also post pictures of their artwork to the online gallery and become instantly WorldWideWeb famous.

Champion reading in your home!

Parents, your children need you to be their champions! Research tells us that when adults are part of a child’s reading journey their influence can help their children become lifelong learners.

The Summer Reading Club provides opportunities for families to work together so all children can complete the online activities. Look for the Frequently Asked Questions on the Summer Reading Club homepage, for ideas for working together. To inspire your family’s reading adventures why not set aside time each day to complete a challenge or encourage reading moments by working through the challenges yourself. Though you might not earn a badge online, we know you will become your child’s reading legend as you work alongside them.

And remember, the little readers in your home may need help to complete the challenges and share them online!

Why Summer Reading?

The summer school holidays are a time for kicking back, catching up with friends, playing outside, and enjoying the freedom that comes with being young, having no responsibilities, and no homework for the summer!

All this free time can however result in a loss of learning gained during the school year, which is often referred to as the ‘Summer Slide.’

Reading over the summer holidays helps children hold on to the knowledge and skills they developed during the school year and provides free and fun activities that can be done at home, on holidays or out and about.

The Summer Reading Club delivered annually by the State Library of Queensland online and in public libraries and Indigenous Knowledge Centres across Queensland to encourage children to keep reading through the summer!

Register your child's participation online and visit your local library to see what Tales of Wonder await your families this summer.
