Newmarket, Erneton Estate, 1904 (Map of the Week)
By JOL Admin | 6 April 2016
State Library of Queensland has an extensive collection of historical maps of Queensland, some of which have been digitised and can be viewed online.
This real estate map from 1904 is advertising 206 allotments of land for sale at the Erneton Estate in the Brisbane suburb of Newmarket. The allotments were situated along Erneton Street, Terrace Street, North Street, Ward Street, Enoggera Terrace, Wickham Street and Short Street (now Burnley Street).
Prior to the sale extensive publicity was published in the Brisbane Courier and The Telegraph newspapers with advertisements highlighting the close proximity of the estate to Newmarket Railway Station and the Kelvin Grove Tram Terminus.
A public auction was held at the site on the afternoon of March 16, 1904 with approximately 150 people attending. Of the 206 allotments for sale, 85 were sold on the day for grand total of £1,742 ($290,000 today). After 30 minutes of bidding a heavy downpour dampened the remainder of the proceedings.
