Mount Coolum Beach Estate: 2nd section, 1923 (Map of the Week)
State Library of Queensland has an extensive collection of historical maps of Queensland, some of which have been digitised and can be viewed online.
This real estate map from 1923 advertises 100 allotments of land for sale at the Mt Coolum Beach Estate (2nd section) on the Sunshine Coast. The allotments were situated along Coolum Terrace, Scrub Road and the Esplanade.
Prior to the sale extensive publicity was published in Brisbane newspapers and in the Sunshine Coast newspaper Nambour Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser.
"Mount Coolum Beach possesses attractions far beyond any other seaside in South Queensland. Its superb and safe beach for surfing in paramount...The thrilling natural toboggan, which is to be reserved for the residents, mountaineering on Mt Coolum and Mt Peregian, where the views are so entrancing; scrub hunting for orchids and ferns in the gorge and in the dense tropical scrubs, and the wild flowers on the heath in September and October are beautiful beyond description." A public auction was held at the site on the afternoon of December 26, 1923. The Nambour Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser newspaper reported the results of the sale –
"A highly successful sale of allotments was conducted on the grouns at Mt Coolum Beach on Boxing Day by Messrs Isles, Love and Co Ltd, Brisbane, Thornton and Murtagh, Nambour, and L.B. Hunter, Yandina. Mr G.H. Thornton, Thornton and Murtagh welded the hammer. Part of the second section was subitted to auction. In all, 54 allotments were disposed of, the prices ranging from £58 to £104/10/-, averaging for the sale £74 per block . A good number of lots are under offerm and at least 25 more are likely to be sold before the weekend. Buyers were in attendance from Childers, Bundaberg, Brisbane, Cooroy, Nambour and Yandina."
