Longlands Estate, [Woolloongabba], 1881 (Map of the Week)

This real estate map from 1881 advertises 232 allotments of land for sale at the Longlands Estate, now part of the Brisbane inner-city suburb of Woolloongabba. The allotments were situated along Longlands Street, Norman Street and Vulture Street (now Vulture Street East).

Prior to the sale extensive publicity was published in Brisbane newspapers.

"The Longlands Estate is only five minutes' walk from Chalk's Stable, Kangaroo Point, where omnibuses pass every twenty minutes, commanding a magnificent view of the suburban residences on the Cleveland Road and Woolloongabba." (Brisbane Courier, 14 November 1881, p.4)

A public auction was held at the site on the afternoon of 26 November 1881. The results of the sale were published in the Brisbane Courier newspaper.

"The success attending this sale far exceeded the expectations of the auctioneer; the sale commenced at 3 p.m. and was carried on until darkness put a stop to it, by which time 120 allotments had been disposed of, at prices satisfactory to vendor and purchaser, several changing hands during the afternoon at a good advance. The sale was most numerously attended, there being nearly 200 people present. We note the sale with be resumed at 3 p.m. next Saturday." (Brisbane Courier, 29 November 1881, p.2)
