Welcome to Library and Information Week 2024, (29 July-4 August). This year’s theme, Roots of Democracy, looks at the profound connection between libraries and the knowledge, values and principles that contribute to a democratic society.
Acknowledging this important link prompts us to reflect deeply on the pivotal role libraries play in our society, particularly in times of global uncertainty and change. This year we are also acknowledging the 100-year anniversary of compulsory voting in Australia. Our country stands out amongst democracies for its high voter turnout and inclusive electoral system that promotes fair representation for all citizens.
Queensland State Library brings this theme of democracy to life through our curated album of Queensland’s voting history. We live in a nation where voting is a right and a duty, and these historic images capture some of the pivotal moments that shaped democratic practices in our State.
