Lathorn Estate, [Yeerongpilly / Yeronga], 1885 (Map of the Week)

This real estate map from 1885 advertises 118 allotments of land for sale at Lathorn Estate in the Brisbane suburbs of Yerongpilly and Yeronga. The allotments were situated along Ipswich Road, Bradley Street, Patrick Street, North Terrace (now School Road), Marcaret Street (now Albemarle Street), South Terrace (now South Street) and Herbert Street (now Soden Street).

Prior to the sale extensive publicity was published in Brisbane newspapers.

"Coaches pass the Lathorn Estate every half hour, so that purchasers will suffer no inconvenience in going to and from the city. It may be honestly stated that this grand estate possesses sites unequalled elsewhere in the district, and will within a very short period become a settlement of very great importance, as it at present offers every inducement to those to settle, who are so inclined, as it is within easy reach of the town, therefore offering chances to those engaged in the city daily, to have their comfortable homes in a nicely-retired and healthy locality." A public auction was held at the site on the afternoon of April 25, 1885. The Brisbane Courier newspaper reported the results of the sale.

"Messrs James R. Dickson and company report a very successful sale of a portion of the Lathorn Estate, leaving the balance to be dealt with privately." (Brisbane Courier, April 27, 1885)
