'Idolised entrepreneurs': Hosing down the startup hype

A leading US expert has warned the hype around startup firms means that many people want to be an entrepreneur for no other reason than "it sounds good".
At a lunch in Melbourne last week, hosted by startup body Launch Vic, a hot topic of conversation was the confusion between small businesses and startups.
Jo Ann Corkran, a partner in Golden Seeds in the United States which funds women led startups, said just because you are starting a business doesn't mean you are starting a startup.
"We have somehow idolised and iconised entrepreneurs so there are people who want to be an entrepreneur for no reason other than it sounds good," she told a lunch.
"So we have those people mixed up with a lot of people who are starting businesses that are really lifestyle businesses that you can make a fantastic living from but these are not businesses that should ever take in capital or that capital should ever come out of."
She said startups and small businesses were very different beasts with different needs. Read more
