Grovely Station Estate, [Keperra], 1918 (Map of the Week)

This real estate map from 1918 advertises land for sale at the Grovely Station Estate, now part of the Brisbane suburb of Keperra. In the mid-1970s Grovely had become a locality in Keperra. The allotments were situated along Pershing Street, Wilson Street (now Rolleston Street), Railway Parade (now Blaker Road), March Lane and an unnamed road (Dawson Parade).

Extensive publicity for the Grovely Station Estate was published in Brisbane newspapers prior to the auction on 26 October 1918.

"'The sale of the year' is what the auctioneers (Messrs W.J. Down and Co., Longreach Buildings, North Quay) claim for the Grovely Station Estate, to be offered by them on the ground on Saturday, 26th instant. A special train is being provided together with free railway tickets. The auctioneers have made arrangements whereby tickets will be issued at any of the stations between Central and Grovely, without the production of any coupon or voucher. This will do away with the necessity of patrons having to go to the trouble of getting a voucher from the auctioneers, as is generally the case. Furthermore, the estate which comprises beautifully elevated allotments (105 all told), and right at the station, will be offered practically without reserve." (Daily Mail, 16 October 1918, p.9).

Find your Keperra or Grovely house in the Frank and Eunice Corley collection

From the 1960s to the 1970s, Frank and Eunice Corley drove the suburban streets of Queensland in their pink Cadillac, taking photographs of houses and selling them to homeowners. A database containing over 61,000 photographs can now be searched and viewed online. There are 803 photographs for Keperra and 301 photographs for Grovely in the database.

The Corley collection is the focus of State Library of Queensland’s latest exhibition, Home: a suburban obsession, which runs from 7 December 2018 until 14 July 2019.
