By Anne Reddacliff, Librarian, Information and Client Services | 4 March 2021

Are you crafty? Do you like reading about social justice or prefer celebrity gossip? Whatever your answer, State Library has magazines for you! In our magazine collections on level 2 we have copies of Frankie magazine, editions of Peppermint and all the latest from the Australian Women’s Weekly. There’s something for every age and every interest!

Let’s start with Frankie magazine. It’s an eclectic mix of articles about everything from adulting and living with disability to debutantes and Blackfulla Bookclub. Combine this with arts and craft and you’ve got a recipe for a social issues magazine that also caters to lovers of vintage fashion and design. The models still don’t  represent a diverse range of body types, but Frankie is a step in the right direction towards a socially progressive magazine for young women.

Then there’s Peppermint. With a focus on sustainability, this magazine is also targeted at young women, and prides itself on being an alternative to the kind of teen magazines we saw in the early 2000s, like Dolly and Girlfriend, or women’s magazines like the now defunct Cosmopolitan. State Library has new issues of this magazine in the level 4 collection (which cannot be borrowed), and borrowable issues from 2014 on level 2. It’s a timeless magazine, so check it out! Even from 2014 you can still find useful articles on sustainable communities and the kindness movement. Be inspired by advice on sustainability that never dates.

But if you still crave a fix of celebrity gossip and star signs, we also have the Australian Women’s Weekly, including the latest issue. You can borrow it from level 2 any time you feel the need to wander down into the Garden of Eden that is lifestyles of the rich and the famous. This magazine has been in print since 1933 and truly is an Australian icon. Other magazines you might enjoy are Frock, Paper, Scissors, which includes articles on non-binary fashion, Vogue Australia and Vogue Living Australia for those looking for some home décor inspiration.

We celebrate International Women’s Day on 8 March, so why not keep celebrating with State Library’s magazine collection? We’ve got all you need for those times when you just want to sit down, relax, have a cup of tea and read!

Can’t make it into State Library? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with our online access to PressReader, which includes magazines from over 120 countries in over 60 languages. Catering for all interests, PressReader includes many of the most popular magazines – all available from your own device. Enjoy!
