John, a retired industrial chemist and university instructor, has devoted the past seven years to online chemistry education, primarily assisting first-year university students studying health sciences, including nursing, dental, and pharmaceutical fields. Recognising a gap in the online teaching realm, he was inspired to create the OER (Open Education Resources) Chemistry Lab Kit, aiming to enrich online learning with a more hands-on laboratory experience.
This innovative lab kit is a microprocessor-controlled device, designed to facilitate a range of chemical reactions. Its features include:
-
A precision scale for accurate measurements.
-
Three pumps for fluid dispensation.
-
A temperature sensor.
-
A heating element.
All these components are controlled with a Raspberry Pi Pico microprocessor. This Pico also features additional I/O ports, allowing for experimental modules in the future. John has written programs for tasks such as balance management, pump operations, calorimetry, titration, and a captivating colour wheel demonstration.

The Edge’s specalised facilities played a pivotal role in the construction of this chemistry kit. John utilised the laser cutter's capabilities, crafting the kit's frame and colour wheel flow cells. This tool's precision allowed for intricate details, from perfectly cut holes to chemistry-themed engravings, including a periodic table. Recently, John achieved a breakthrough by crafting precise gaskets, ensuring leak-proof seals for flow cells developed from laser-cut acrylic. The kit's pump mechanism and balance housing were created with the 3D printers.

As an advocate of Open Education Resources (OER), John aspires to foster a collaborative environment to support innovation. He is committed to sharing all designs, software blueprints, and teaching materials on an open-source platform, which is currently in the selection phase. John invites contributions and collaborations in developing new experimental modules for his chemistry kit. He envisions a chemistry lab curriculum built around the OER Chemistry Lab Kit in the near future, encompassing unique experimental modules, structured lessons, and methodical procedures.
