DIY dentistry: Meet Australia's dental disruptors

Ed Ambrosius is not an orthodontist by trade, but his day job involves delivering clear-aligner braces to patients so they don't have to leave the house.
Ambrosius worked for years in the consumer goods sector before a client came to him with the idea of "home delivery braces", having seen the business model in the US.
The start-up EZ Smile was born in 2016: a delivery service that helps patients fix their teeth at home without hopping in the orthodontist’s chair.
Over the past year, thousands of clients have registered interest for clear-aligner braces online.
Patients fill in their details, sign a consent form online and then one of EZ Smile’s orthodontists reviews their case.
Patients use an “impression kit” to take an imprint of their teeth, then the orthodontist creates a treatment plan for them to wear the braces over the next four to six months.
Ambrosius says he is reluctant to call the service "DIY", because qualified orthodontists review each case. However, the whole treatment occurs without patients ever having to meet a specialist in person. Read more
