This real estate map from 1884 advertises 140 allotments of land for sale at the Bowen Terrace Estate,  located in the Brisbane suburb of New Farm. The allotments were situated along Abbott Street, Sydney Street, Reginald Street, Herbert Street, Moray Street, Boundary Street (now Merthyr Road), Bowen Terrace (now Lower Bowen Terrace) and Mark Street (listed on the map as Marks Street).

The estate bordered with Merthyr House, the residence of the Queensland premier, Samuel Walker Griffith, a fact which was promoted in advertisements and highlighted on the real estate map.

Prior to the sale extensive publicity was published in Brisbane newspapers.

“The surroundings are of the most respectable and most interesting character. The neighbourhood reminds one of the merry homes of old England - large and elegant mansions, beautiful and everchanging river scenery. Pleasure in sound, sight and nature...Remember - the land is elevated; like a bowling green; every inch available; and dry; while other localities are soppy, soft, and uncomfortable.” (Brisbane Courier, July 31, 1884).

A public auction was held at the site on the afternoon of August 2, 1884. The Brisbane Courier newspaper reported the results of the sale.

“Mr John W. Todd reports a large attendance at the Bowen Terrace Estate sale last Saturday. 22 allotments were sold out of 140, realising £3,129. A distinguishing feature of the sale was the selling at per foot fronting the Hon. S.W. Griffith's residence. The balance were withdrawn for private sale.” (Brisbane Courier, August 9, 1884)
