Stranded: celebrating 50 years of 4ZZZ

Join State Library of Queensland in celebrating five decades of 4ZZZ Radio, and their legacy of independent media and the music, arts, fashion and design culture surrounding the station and Brisbane community. 

From late October 2025 to May 2026, explore the vibrant world of subcultures, storytelling, and radical creativity sparked by 4ZZZ, from punk origins and underground gigs to the voices of Murri Radio, Queer Radio, Dykes on Mics, and more. 

Stranded at The Edge

Stranded will take over The Edge from the first week of December with an exciting range of talks, workshops and digital experiences. 

Stranded Conversations

Mark your calendar for 3–6 December and celebrate the radical legacy of independent media and culture in Queensland. Ticketed events will be on sale soon. These are paid events and will be available for purchase in multi packages. ($25 x 1 talk, $40 x 2 talks, $50 x 3 talks). 

Independent media, 6-8 pm Wednesday 3 December:
Listen to our panel discussion on the role of democratic media and community broadcasting in Queensland throughout the last 50yrs, including the birth of 4ZZZ. 

Music and culture, 6-8 pm Thursday 4 December:
Explore subculture trends through the last 50 years of Queensland. From the music, the fashion, and the art through to technology advancements, including vinyl records to Spotify playlists.

Iconic spaces, 2-4 pm Saturday 6 December:
Unpack the stories behind Brisbane’s legendary venues and community spaces. From the 4ZZZ building and history at UQ, White Chairs, Cloudland, Festival Hall, The Roxy/Arena, The Zoo, Rics, DIY venues and beyond.

Digital showcase 

In December explore 50 years of audio-visual history across The Edge’s digital screens. Catch a collection of photos, videos, promotional posters and art from the 4ZZZ archive.

White Gloves Experiences

Get hands on with rarely seen items from the 4ZZZ collection. Our White gloves experiences will run 4 pm to 6 pm Wednesday 3 December and Thursday 4 December. Booking info to come.

Level 4 exhibit 

From late October 2025 – May 2026, Level 4 Gallery, State Library of Queensland.
In addition to the Stranded at The Edge event series, visit level 4 of State Library of Queensland to discover unique items from State Library’s collection that trace the impact of 4ZZZ and Brisbane’s DIY creative scene.
