Design your own picture frame

Ever wanted to design and create your own picture frame?

Join us over two Saturday sessions as we dive into the history of framing and learn the art of the bevel and border, as we teach you the basics of 3D modelling and plaster casting.

Picture frames perform dual functions by safeguarding artwork, photos, and collections, while also enhancing their presentation. Even State Library holds a collection of picture frames.

Frames themselves can be regarded as artistic creations, with some historical designs being even more ornate than the artwork they enclose. During this workshop series we’ll work with you to design your own custom frame, as detailed or as simple as you like.

The design your own picture frames workshop series is running on 16 and 30 August from 1–5 pm. During the sessions you will learn the fundamentals of designing for 3D printing using TinkerCAD, vector design work in Inkscape and be taken through a 3D printer induction for The Edge 3D printers. You will also learn how to turn a 3D print into a mould for making multiple cast versions using plaster.

Please note that you must be able to attend both sessions, as the second builds on the workflow from the previous session. No previous 3D modelling knowledge is required, just intermediate computer skills, creativity and enthusiasm.
