80 years on: remembering Victory in the Pacific World War II tours

Join us at Anzac Square this August for free guided tours exploring Australia’s involvement in the Pacific Campaign during World War II.

This year we mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific (VP80), the end of Australia’s involvement in World War II. On 15 August 1945 jubilant celebrations broke out across Australia after Imperial Japan unconditionally surrendered to Allied Forces, ending six long years of conflict. 80 years on we still remember the service, sacrifice and bravery of all the men and women who fought to defend our nation, values and way of life during this conflict.

As part of VP80 commemorations, join us for a free 45-minute tour exploring the war in the Pacific from Australia’s perspective. Tours depart at 10:30 am, 11:30 am and 12:30 pm each Sunday for the month of August. Come along to discover:

  • The histories behind the World War II statues in Anzac Square
  • Key campaigns and battles, such as Singapore, Kokoda, Milne Bay, Guadalcanal
  • The profound impact on the Australian Homefront, including the mobilisation of women and bombing of Townsville
  • Personal stories of service personnel, such as Gunner William Thompson, a Japanese prisoner of war.
  • The post-war legacy and occupation of Japan

Bookings are essential.

Anzac Square Memorial Galleries is located at 285 Ann Street, Brisbane. Entry is through the double brass doors located beneath the Shrine of Remembrance.
