Join us for a holiday adventure at the State Library this winter and discover new ways to play.  

Make your mark, get set... go! Unleash your creativity and make an impression these school holidays with lots of opportunities to express yourself. Transform into an animal through costumes and stories with Nylon Zoo, experiment with line and shape in The Corner or tell your story through portrait play in kuril dhagun.  

On Saturday 29 June join us in staying up after dark for Winter night – a special nocturnal program with illuminated inflatable animals, games, light projection, music and more. Bring a picnic rug to enjoy the sunset from Maiwar Green or pick up some delicious wood-fired pizza available from 4 pm.

Recommended all ages Step into the whimsical world of the Nylon Zoo, where imagination knows no bounds. Inspired by the graceful flight of birds, the delicate flutter of butterflies, and the mysterious swoop of bats, children are invited to pop on handcrafted costumes and embark on an enchanting costume parade. Whether hopping like a frog, bouncing like a kangaroo, or twirling in a rainbow cape, there's endless fun to be had. After the parade, take a journey inside one of the gorgeous handmade inflatable creatures, then settle in for a captivating storytime experience, narrated by a professional storyteller. A unique and unforgettable experience! Places are limited so be sure to book to secure your place. Recommended all ages. Drop into kuril dhagun and experience the vibrant world of Deaf in dance, an exhibition that celebrates the people and passion behind the Deaf Indigenous Dance Group (DIDG). Feel the beat as you explore dancer portraits adorned with words and drawings by the artists themselves, alongside digital stories and a focus on accessible design. Then strike a fun pose to create your own portrait masterpiece with our thermal cameras to contribute to our giant mural. Use a mixture of State Library collection images, pens, paper and collage to unleash your creativity and celebrate the power of community and identity. As the sun sets on the evening of 29 June, the magic of the Nylon Zoo will continue with our special nocturnal program; lights, games, projection, music and more, create a magical experience for all. Bring a picnic rug to enjoy the sunset from Maiwar Green, there will be freshly made wood-fired pizza, available from 4 pm. Explore the program below, with a mix of drop in and bookable activities, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Song circle by the fire with Mama Tun

Join Mama Tun, a proud Torres-Strait and Aboriginal woman for an evening of weaving, music and songs around the fire in kuril dhagun – a special spot that overlooks Maiwar (the river) twinkling city lights and our unique cultural precinct. Discover new songs and some old favourites and share in the joy of singing around the fire. No previous singing experience needed as everyone is welcome! Recommended ages 8+ Calling all aspiring animators and creative families! Step into the world of digital artistry with our exciting drop-in activity creating live projections using an iPad and Tagtool app. Join us for a hands-on experience where you'll unleash your imagination and bring your ideas to life through the magic of animation under the guidance of our facilitator. You will learn the basics of Tagtool to create your own animation using State Library collection images and your own drawings. Once your animations are completed, we'll project them onto the outside surfaces of Maiwar Green, transforming the space into a vibrant tapestry of light and motion for Winter Night.
