black&write! Writing Fellowships

Are you an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander writer with an unpublished manuscript? Would you like the chance to develop your manuscript with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander editors, plus win a cash prize and possible publication with Hachette Australia? Then you’ve come to the right place.

Each year black&write! offers two Fellowships through a writing competition. Applications open in November and close in January. We invite you to submit your unpublished manuscripts to be considered by a panel of expert judges with knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander writing.

Manuscripts can be any of the following genres:

  • fiction
  • poetry
  • short stories
  • children’s or young adult.

The two winning Fellows will each receive:

  • $10,000 cash
  • manuscript development with the black&write! team
  • a publication opportunity with Hachette Australia.

The Fellows work with black&write! editors to develop their manuscripts for publication. The edited manuscripts then have the opportunity to be published by Hachette Australia, black&write!'s publishing partner.

If you have any questions that aren’t answered here, feel free to contact the black&write! team at Indigenous.Writing@slq.qld.gov.au or on (07) 3842 9985.

The black&write! Fellowships are made possible with support from Australia Council, and by partner organisations Hachette Australia and Magabala Books.
