Activities, workshops, and self-guided experiences to help students explore and engage with Sate Library's collections.

Guided research experience workshop

50 max students & chaperones I Years 7–12 | 2-hour session I 10am – 12pm & 12.30pm – 2.30pm 

This hands-on, on-site experience empowers students to confidently navigate the research process. Led by an expert library professional, students in Years 7-12 will learn to generate effective search inquiries, use State Library’s One Search catalogue, and explore both physical collections and digital resources, including e-books, e-journals, and e-newspapers to complete pre-assigned tasks or class assessments efficiently.

Whether it’s locating primary sources, selecting credible materials, or organising references, our team is here to help students master the essential skills for successful research.

  • Teachers must provide a research topic or assignment question when booking.
  • Students are required to sign up for a free State Library of Queensland membership to maximise their experience and gain full access to the library’s resources.

Independent study 

50 students & chaperones max | Years 7–12 | 2–hour session I 10am–12pm & 12.30pm –2.30pm

Reserve our schools study space on level 3, which includes large tables for study and quiet instruction, as well as access to State Library’s collections. Please note that dedicated librarian assistance is not included with this booking. If you need support with assessment topics or preparation, we recommend booking our Research Experience.

Deaf in Dance schools' tour

35 students max | All years | 20-minute guided tour I 10am – 12pm & 12.30pm – 2.30pm | Until 16 March 2025

Deaf in dance showcases the unique and inspiring journey of a renowned Cairns-based Deaf Indigenous Dance Group (DIDG). Spanning over 27 years of community impact and engagement, DIDG has seen many hard-of-hearing Indigenous dancers form part of its rich tapestry of cultural expression.

Treasure hunt 

Years 6–10 | 10am–2.30pm | self-guided

Embark on an exciting self-guided 'Treasure Hunt' adventure at the State Library! 
Teachers can lead small groups of 2-10 students on a quest filled with fun tasks that encourage exploration across all five floors of the building. 

  • Download the dedicated State Library resource for the self-guided 'Treasure hunt' experience.
  • For primary school groups, adult supervision is required for each small group to ensure a safe and enriching experience.

Art in public spaces

35 max students & chaperones | Years 7–12 | 10am–2.30pm | self-guided

Explore three stunning First Nations public art installations located at State Library of Queensland in this self-guided tour. Experience MAIWAR Yunggulba (2017) by Megan Cope, Kurilpa Country by Lilla Watson, and Black Opium (2006) by Fiona Foley.

Anzac Square Memorial Galleries tour

30 students max | Years 7 – 10 | 45 minute session

Teachers, book a free school tour of Anzac Square & Memorial Galleries and allow your students to explore the people, places and stories that underpin Queensland's military history. Our knowledgeable guides will bring history to life as they lead your students through the interactive exhibition, engaging them in an authentic, participatory learning process. Through this tour, students can discover the local significance of Australia's war history and uncover the stories of Queenslanders who showed remarkable courage, resilience, bravery, and selflessness during times of conflict.
