Why Berlin's vibrant culture is good for business

With his bleached hair and suntanned skin, James Watkins looks like he belongs on Sydney’s northern beaches with a surfboard under his arm, rather than peddling a bicycle through Berlin’s Mitte district.
But Watkins swapped the waves of Narrabeen five years ago for the German capital where he has established Gnarles, a music licensing startup.
“It’s a subscription-based platform so it’s kind of like Spotify for filmmakers,” he says. “Our platform is for filmmakers to get unlimited use of music from a curated music catalogue that focuses on emerging artists and, like, fresh music that you can’t find on other platforms.”
His business is expanding to include music curation experts and he is also involved in another startup, NOFOMO.TV, which develops live streaming videos for brands and events.
The 35-year-old Watkins, who used to work for a surfboard company, came up with the idea for Gnarles after noticing how difficult it was to find music for videos. “Basically I wanted to help filmmakers find really cool music, really easily, for a lot cheaper price,” he says. Read more
