State Library’s contribution to an internationally significant collection has been recognised. The James Tyson Papers, held collectively by the Deniliquin & District Historical Society, National Library of Australia, Queensland State Archives and the State Library of Queensland, have been added to the UNESCO Memory of the World Australian Register.
James Tyson (1819-1898)
James Tyson was an influential pastoralist, creating considerable infrastructure and wealth through rural Queensland and Australia. Involved primarily in the cattle industry, Tyson acquired large amounts of land, including Tinnenburra, a 2.1 million acre property near Cunnamulla. His personal wealth in 1898 was estimated at £2.36 million (the equivalent of $13 billion today), which was 1.3% of Australia’s GDP.
James Tyson was inducted into the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame in 2010.
