We’re celebrating Library and Information Week and today we’d like to share APDL’s most borrowed books and magazines from the design collection.

Design Lounge Coordinator Chenoa Pettrup who compiled our top five list said she was surprised by the results which revealed design magazines as our most accessed publications.

“Magazines do get used a lot more than the books in the collection, which makes sense if you consider the quick page-turning nature of the medium,” said Chenoa.

Vogue Australia was the most accessed magazine in the collection, closely followed by Monocle.”

Vogue Living Australia and The Architects' Journal came in third and fourth on the list, with Domus and Japan Architect tying for fifth position.

Poemotion by Takahiro Kurashima topped the list as the most accessed book in the APDL. It is a collection of abstract black and white graphical patterns which are set in motion as a sheet of moire film is moved over them.

“What did surprise me though was that our most popular design book is one which is completely wordless!”said Chenoa

“Another fascinating element to the list is there is a strong interest in green and sustainable building design, with two of the five books focused on those areas - 100 Contemporary green buildings came third and Architecture of Change: Sustainability and humanity in the build environment was fifth.

“Lists such as these speak to the interests of our visitors at this point in time and shows the ever-changing progression of design as a discipline.”

Sketching: the basics by Koos Eissen & Roselien Steur was second on the list while independent self-published 5: a documentation of the work from design studio by Edwards Moore was fourth.

APDL’s top books and magazines may be borrowed for up to four weeks by SLQ members. Find out how to become an SLQ member here.
