Rising Sun Service Muckadilla

By Marg Powell, Specialist Library Technician, Metadata Services | 4 May 2015

Jon Hacker and John Lethbridge, organisers of the 2015 Rising Sun Service at Muckadilla arranged for something special to mark the 100 years of the landing at Gallipoli.

The procession formed up opposite the Muckadilla Hotel before dawn, with David Schefe and Ivan Gilles from The Roma Lighthorse Brigade leading, followed by service men and women.

Those waiting at the Muckadilla War Memorial were impressed as the Lighthorse Men and those following emerged from the trees in the half light and it was rather fitting that during the address the morning sun peeped over the crest of Fettler’s Hill.

After the service everyone was invited to place their wreaths at the base of the memorial, there was a great attendance, young and old alike to acknowledge those that had served in the First World War and subsequent conflicts.

Several younger men played the parts of John Black, David Bowden, Daniel Curran, Patrick Curran, James Orr, William Orr Senior, William Orr Junior, Guy Nield, Daniel Sandison, John Streten and Henry (better known as Mad Harry) Murray VC – the most decorated Australian soldier in World War One. Each man came forward and gave his name, signed to join and then told the crowd where he enlisted, served, his war experiences and whether he came home or was killed in action.

At the conclusion, everyone was invited everyone to enjoy breakfast at the Muckadilla Pub. The organisers are planning another theme for 2016 ANZAC Day.
