Photographs from World Refugee Day 2011

By Administrator | 19 December 2018

When we think about historic photograph collections often we think of sepia toned or colour touched works – invoking in us either a sense of nostalgia or confronting us with the blatant violence of the past.

But history is not made only of pre-digital times. History is created from the present. As part of our responsibility here at State Library of Queensland we are preserving the present to make safe the history of tomorrow.

To that end we are always making available new collections of digital photos. This particular series was taken at World Refugee day Community Festival in 2011 by the photographer Hamish Cairns. This celebration took place at Greenslopes at the Annerley Football club.

The community festival of multicultural arts, food and cultural celebration is supported by Brisbane City Council and the Multicultural Development Association and occurs every year.

Hamish Cairns is a documentary photographer based in Brisbane. His work has appeared in the Australian media, film & tv industries.

This beautiful album of photographs contains black and white portraits of people at the festival.

More about World Refugee Day:

“Every year on 20 June, the world honours the courage, resilience and strength of refugees during World Refugee Day. The World Refugee Day Community Festival celebrates the contribution new and emerging refugee communities are making to South East Queensland.

Over 15,000 people attend Australia’s largest refugee festival to celebrate the cultural diversity of emerging refugee communities and the vibrancy they contribute to Brisbane’s culture. It’s an opportunity for us to welcome our newly arrived refugees in the city so come along and join the welcome party.

The festival is part of World Refugee Week celebrations. The week aims to raise awareness about refugee matters and restore hope to their lives.

MDA presents the festival and it is supported by Brisbane City Council” From MDA facebook event page 2014.
