Outlook rosy for small business

Sharon Melamed is expecting double-digit growth for her business in 2018.

The founder of Matchboard says the platform that helps businesses find suppliers turned over just under $500,000 last year, with $7 million billed through it.

"I'm very optimistic," Melamed says. "We are launching a new responsive website to draw mobile customers in and we have a strong sales pipeline and we have introduced a new service where we take online business matching offline and have lunches where we match businesses with suppliers. We also expanded to the UK and got an Austrade grant."

Melamed started Matchboard five years ago but she expects 2018 to be the year the business will boom thanks to a strong environment for business.

"Everyone is backing us, there are government grants left right and centre and such great ecosystems and networking supporting entrepreneurs and so many people giving advice," she says. "I personally feel it has never been a better time to start a business."

Three-year high

Melamed is not the only small business owner feeling positive, with MYOB's Business Monitor survey published on Tuesday showing business confidence is at a three-year high.

The business software provider's survey of more than 1000 small business owners and managers found more than one in three SME owners expected their revenue to increase over the next 12 months. Read more
