New librarian excited about the future of Thargomindah Library

On Monday 4 February this year I started my new job as a Librarian and Tourism Officer at the Bulloo Shire Council. Two days later I read an email from State Library of Queensland offering training opportunities. How perfect was that. Especially since they were also offering travel bursaries to successful applicants. (This blog has actually been submitted as part of the Acquittal). I quickly applied for the bursary and pending its approval, my Council gave permission for me to attend the four-day 2019 Rural Libraries Queensland and small libraries workshop.

Bursary approved, tickets booked, accommodation booked so off I went. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Being a brand-new librarian, I wasn’t sure what to expect. My preconceived ideas of what it means to be a librarian quickly went out the window. We care about education, inclusion, preservation, history, science, art and so much more. I have learnt about a diverse range of products and services that the library has on offer.

I have taken these ideas home to Thargomindah and I am in the process of implementing some of them. The thought of introducing old and new library members to e-resources excites me. Bringing library services to all residents of the Bulloo Shire, not only the town of Thargomindah, in the form of a mobile library is something I am working on. Of course, we will continue with our existing programs like First Five Forever as well as our seniors’ activities. It’s exciting to see what our library’s future is going to look like. I, for one, can’t wait!
