Chairman of the judging panel, State Library of NSW Mitchell Librarian Richard Neville, said of the chosen novel: "Sentence-by-sentence, it is elegant, full of life and funny. With her characteristic wit and style, Michelle de Kretser dissects the way Australians see ourselves, and reflects on the ways other parts of the world see us." (ABC News 26/8/18)
Other shortlist titles were Kim Scott for Taboo; Gerald Murnane for Border Districts, Eva Hornung for The Last Garden, Catherine McKinnon for Storyland and Felicity Castagna for No More Boats.
De Kretser previously won the Miles Franklin award in 2013 for her novel Questions of Travel. De Kretser was born in Sri Lanka and lives in Sydney. She was a travel editor for Lonely Planet before writing her first novel The Rose Grower. She is now the author of six novels. Read more about the author here.
