Co-founder of Iscariot Media, Vernon Ah Kee, juggles between his own varied creative works and his highly successful business advising other Indigenous arts practitioners on how to grow and develop their ventures.
Vernon works with creative mediums as varied as large-scale drawings of his ancestors to hard-hitting text-based works and installations. His artwork is a reflection on the history of colonisation and an exploration of contemporary Indigenous political issues.
After completing his studies Vernon worked as an academic at the Queensland College of Art, before becoming a full-time practicing artist. In 2009 Vernon represented Australia at Venice Biennale, and his work is held in a number of private and public collections in Australia and overseas.
On the side of his arts practice, Vernon started Iscariot Media in 2011 with Leesa Watego. One of Vernon’s projects, Dark + Disturbing, began to develop in 2013 with Iscariot managing both concept development and administration, laying the foundations for Iscariot to branch into other art project work. In 2015, Iscariot Media sponsored the inaugural Indigenous Business Month creating both the logo and website. Iscariot Media’s scope continues to evolve, with a continued focus on providing excellent service to clients.
Extending the specialist business support Iscariot Media provides, Vernon will be hosting a workshop at SLQ tomorrow (Saturday 18 March) teaching Indigenous artists and entrepreneurs about copyright and Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP).
