Live a more sustainable life with State Library

By Anne Reddacliff, Librarian, Library and Client Services | 4 January 2024

Sustainability is something we strive for. In these days of climate change and natural disasters we want to feel like we still have some control over the state of the planet, and living a sustainable lifestyle is one way we can do that.

State Library supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), which advocate a better future for us and for the planet by 2030. Because we support the UN SDGs, sustainability is at the heart of what we do.  That’s why we’ve come up with 5 helpful tips for how you can live a more sustainable life with State Library.

  1. Get a library card! This is your passport to borrowing books, DVDs, music scores and lots more. You can find items by searching our One Search catalogue. Borrowing books will save you buying them, thereby reducing the number of trees felled to produce more books, helping the planet and your hip pocket, especially in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis.

  1. Check out ebooks: No trees were directly harmed in the making of our ebooks. Ebooks are a great way to read without the costly paper trail. We’ve even tagged some ebooks on sustainability for you.

  1. Use our eresources: Learn about sustainability. For example, LinkedIn Learning has videos on sustainability, the UN SDGs and sustainable design. It’s free for all Queenslanders.

  1. See our latest exhibition: Purpose Built is all about sustainable architecture in Queensland, both current and historical. It’s on until 14 April 2024 and might even inspire you to make some adjustments to your own home!

  1.  Book in for a workshop or induction at The Edge: The Edge is our makerspace where you can find everything from sewing machines to laser cutters. Repair something old or create something new; it’s all about sustainable design.

Become a member or visit State Library and help us to achieve a more sustainable future. If you can’t visit State Library, you can always ask our librarians for help through our Ask a Librarian service. Live your best life and help to save the planet too.
